Sound Connections managed the London Youth Music Action Zone on behalf of Youth Music between 2002 and 2012.

Youth Music created the YMAZs with the aim to provide music making activities for 0-18 year olds who might otherwise lack opportunity. Although funding for the YMAZs stopped in 2012, Sound Connections has embedded the legacy and learning from the programme into our current plans and future ambitions.

Over the ten years of the YMAZ programme, many successful partnerships have been formed with a range of organisations across London with projects engaging early years, special educational needs, digital and studio music and young people in challenging circumstances.

Sound Connections has worked with more than 70 partners to pioneer new ways of working, establish new partnerships with referral agencies and explore new musical activities enabling ideas to be tested and important lessons to be shared with others.

“By seeing the potential of my project early on Sound Connections provided me with the best possible start. The support I continue to receive goes far beyond financial and has helped me to plan and prioritise aspects of my project with greater clarity. In addition to all of this my contact with Sound Connections has given me the inspiration and confidence to push my professional development into areas I may not have otherwise considered. Sound Connections are my most valuable professional resource.”
Tom Slater, music leader, March 2011
