Young people often have different pathways to discovering music and ways of finding out about different career pathways to pursue.

We know that there are still so many young people who are not accessing the array of musical opportunities and activities that exist for a range of reasons. We also know that often youth services are stretched and don’t always have the time, resource and contacts to support young people to develop their musical interests.

We want to do something about that.

In this exciting partnership, London Youth and Sound Connections are coming together to close these gaps by supporting music organisations to work better with youth workers. We want to demystify the pathways into music for young people, make it easier to find and signpost opportunities, and easier to build sustainable working relationships between youth workers and arts organisations. We want more young people to gain access to the opportunities that they are interested in.

Objectives

– Helping youth workers, local authorities and grassroots groups to understand the landscape of music provision in London

– Helping arts organisations better understand the challenges facing young people, youth worker and grassroots organisations

– Centring and understanding the experiences/needs of different young people and building from there.

– Youth organisations understanding how to keep young people safe and engaging in a positive way with music-making

Who this is for:

– Small community organisations working with young people

– Large and medium sized arts organisations (our focus is music, but the ideas are relevant for a range of organisations

– Youth workers, PRU workers, teachers, social workers

– Music hubs

– Youth centre staff

– Local authority youth/social service providers
