Join us for an online session where we will hear first-hand from Music Hubs across England about how they are working to embed the voices of young people into their practice.
Following their recent participation in Sound Connections’ Activate programme 2024-25, Leicestershire, Lewisham, Norfolk and Suffolk, and Sheffield Music Hubs will share insights into how and why they are working to develop youth voice within their practice, including the outcomes of their Activate projects, reflections, and their intentions moving forwards.
There will be a chance to ask questions and participate (or just listen!) in open conversations surrounding youth voice in practice, particularly through the lens of Music Hubs.
Anyone who is working with (or interested in learning how to use) a youth voice and participation approach in the music, creative and cultural sectors, particularly those with an interest in how this applies in a Music Hub setting.
Leicestershire Music Hub have developed a new annual training programme ‘Leics Invest’, designed to invest in, and develop the skills of, young people who want to help shape the future of music education in Leicester and Leicestershire and who are interested in a creative career. The Activate grant allowed them to provide targeted support to young people of Leicester and Leicestershire, to learn about making a career out of their music and be mentored and supported to progress in the right direction with input from the industry.
Lewisham Music’s ‘Voices of the Next GEN’ project has centred around supporting youth-involvement within Lewisham’s new, diverse, youth-led radio station ‘Radio Lewisham’. The platform has been co-created with young people from the outset and was part of the Young Mayor Jentai’s manifesto in 2023 – ‘A platform for all young people in the borough to share their views and creativity.’
Norfolk & Suffolk Music Hub’s ‘Young Ambassadors Programme’ has provided a comprehensive yearlong training programme designed to support young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities with the opportunity to gain vital skills and work experience in the creative industries.
Sheffield Music HubSheffield Music Hub’s ‘Community of Practice Gathering’ brought together young people from across Sheffield to design and deliver two youth-led events in the 24-25 academic year.
Tickets to all Sound Connections’ events are currently fixed at just £15 (discounts and bursaries still apply, see below for details).
Free to young people aged 16-25, students and unwaged.
