“I’m Spartacus” – A movie that demonstrates authentic leadership

Part of the Global, Inclusive Leadership Series, this resource is shared to help delegates explore the theme of global, inclusive leadership in the lead up to Sound Connections’ annual Inclusive Practice in Action gathering 2023, taking place on Thursday 23 March 2023 at Amnesty International.

So, what does it mean to be a leader?

It is a role that many aim to embody, but do we get it right? Does intention match up with the delivery?

Our Inclusive Practice In Action 2023 event is closely approaching, and we will be discussing all aspects of global leadership, from various perspectives and people coming through from different walks of life.

Spartacus is a 1960 American epic historical drama film directed by Stanley Kubrick, written by Dalton Trumbo, and based on the 1951 novel of the same title by Howard Fast. It is inspired by the life story of Spartacus, the leader of a slave revolt in antiquity, and the events of the Third Servile War.

The beauty of Spartacus and the message conveyed is that despite poor conditions, people still hold leadership qualities in both hands.

Brenda Rattray, Sound Connections workforce and IPIA curator, shares her words about Spartacus and the immense impact of this particular scene from the movie:

“At some point in the film, Spartacus and his men are captured by the Romans. In order to save the lives of his men, Spartacus chooses to identify himself, but as he stands the whole slave army stands with him, screaming I’m Spartacus – it’s wonderful / powerful – Each slave wishes to die in his place, this to me is true leadership!!” – Brenda Rattray

For me, this exposes leadership in the most authentic way. It’s not leadership that stems from money or glossy visuals, nor is it motivational speech. It is leadership formed by the community, uniting together for change and fairness. The word sacrifice stands out to me. What does it mean to use your voice effectively? Coming together to sacrifice yourself to show that you are a part of the change, as opposed to playing a bystander in these fight or flight moments.
